On an event of the Sources Podcast published Tuesday, Marc Benioff told presenter Alex Heath that he initially wanted Salesforce to allocate in OpenAI. Instead, the business backed its rival Anthropic, a decision the Salesforce CEO now thinks could be value a fortune.

"I knew Sam Altman extremely well," Benioff said. "I was like, 'Hey, I'd really akin to be investing now in the company.' And he's like, unfortunately, since of the Microsoft relationship, we were not allowed to allocate in OpenAI."

Microsoft, an endeavor application competitor to Salesforce, holds approximately 27% of OpenAI, has entitlements to use OpenAI innovation in its products, and sells admission to OpenAI models through Azure. Benioff stated the circumstance changed Salesforce's approach.

"We felt like, whoa, we can't go here, we're going to have to go everyplace else," Benioff added, saying it was "not since we were so smart" and spotted an overlooked winner.

Benioff believes the bet could pay off handsomely and stated that the funding has rotate into a near endeavor partnership. Salesforce's Slackbot and another new interfaces are powered by Claude, Anthropic's AI model.

"It's since we have been pushed so near alongside Anthropic," Benioff said. "I think we'll create not fair billions but perchance tens of billions of dollars on it."

Salesforce has not disclosed how much of Anthropic it owns, but an Anthropic IPO could established a community market value for Salesforce's interest and eventually recommendation a way to market shares. The Claude creator has been preparing for a possible listing, although the timing is uncertain. OpenAI is additionally considering a community debut, but Altman stated its IPO would not happen in 2026.
