Like any pure-hearted geek, I've wanted to own a droid always since I saw Star Wars as a kid. Now, I really have one: It's Beni, a new gadget from Mondo Robotics, and it has me saying, "Artoo who?" It's not fair my Upgrade of the Week; it's perchance the upgrade of my life.
Beni is an all-terrain camera robot that was born as a project on Kickstarter, but dissimilar so many another Kickstarted projects, it's really really cool. It takes 4K video during autonomously following its topic anywhere they go. If you desire to get act footage, there's no need to hassle alongside a tripod or another person: You can authority it alongside a remote, or you can create it prosecute you. It can additionally be set to track you from the flank or circle you, and you can modify what it is doing from the app or distant authority on the fly, so alongside minimal effort, there's no bounds to the benevolent of detailed shots it can drag off. Plus it's adorable. Just appearance at this small guy:
Being adorable wouldn't matter if Beni was fair a gimmick, but the footage it takes is really really impressive. Check out this clip, which I recorded alongside no preparedness of any sort; I fair locked Beni's camera on this skater and told it to prosecute him wherever:
See how smoothly it glides complete the uneven concrete? How effortlessly it handles inclines? I equal launched it off a huge ramp and it landed on the another side, righted itself, and got rear to business.
Here's an example of the benevolent of footageyou'll get whenever you put it in "circle you" manner (and again, this was recorded alongside no previous planning):
The way it fair slides under that bench? Come ON. That's fair slick.
Yes, Beni is a slightly silly product, but as slightly silly products go, it's beautiful inarguably awesome. Here is a abbreviated catalog of things I affection concerning Beni:
It's excellent easy-to-use. I got it up and operating moments following taking it out of the box and downloading the app. You can effortlessly fig out how it plant on the fly.
It's a multi-terrain robot. You can get an additional set of bigger, beefier wheels, but equal alongside the inventory tires, this item worked awesome on uneven concrete, grass, and dirt.
It's rugged. While Beni does have obstacle finding ability, it runs into things a lot anyway, but that's not a problem. Beni can obtain massive, epic spills, slam into walls, and get kicked by children, and it volition correct itself and continue on without a hitch. It's amazing to watch.
It really plant the way you anticipate it to. I cognize that's a low bar to clear, but it's rare for a flashy part of tech to really do what it says it promises, and Beni does.
It's adorable. A lot of activity went into making Beni as friendly-looking as possible—it does tricks, blinks its "eyes," responds to gestures, and you can equal provision him a small ballgame cap. Beni's vibe is positive.
It's awesome for social interaction. If you have a small robot following you around, group will desire to conversation to you. I'm not a huge fan of people, but if you desire to create allies at the park, this robot volition at smallest open the door.
It's not as costly as you power imagine. Beni volition run you $750 for the basis model, and $899 for the "Explore Combo" alongside larger wheels, a charging stand, and a small hat. While $750 isn't cheap, for what you get, it's really a beautiful firm deal. Everything expenses a fortune now anyway! You deserve a robot.
