For millions of Americans, the cost of a university education doesn't end following graduation.
As of June 30, 42.3 myriad group held additional than $1.72 trillion in outstanding federal pupil loans, according to the Department of Education.
With the annual sticker cost of attending several colleges surpassing the six-figure mark, many students and families rotate to loans that can obtain years — or equal decades — to repay.
Across the country, national student debt borrowers transport an estimated average balance of $40,768 according to Business Insider's inspection of the latest federal portfolio data released by the Department of Education.
The Department of Education reports the total outstanding national debt balances and the figure of borrowers by their current province of residence. Business Insider reviewed the department's latest publish and classified all 50 US states by the average balance due by borrowers living in all state.
While the national data doesn't indicate the colleges borrowers attended, anywhere they took out their loans, or how much students currently borrow, it shows anywhere borrowers live now and how the federal pupil debt portfolio is dispersed throughout the nation.
