A study app for kids who have fair learned their phonics appears and need item genuine to read. Every term in a narrative can be sounded out alongside the appears they already know. When they get stuck, they tap the term and its audio buttons appear correct there.
I made it for my female Yara. She's six and loves glitter, magic and dragons. She'd completed Teach Your Monster to Read and I couldn't discover item for her to peruse next that was the two a fine narrative and made lone of words she could audio out. Her big brother Tom wrote the archetypal story, and the app is built so there can be many more.
- The assistance lives on the word. Tap any word: a dot under sole letters, a bar under pairs akin "sh" and "ee", an arc joining split vowels akin a_e. One speaker clasp lights all audio in turn, afterward says the word. It never says entire pages for them.
- The checker is the point. Stories are checked term by term against the appears the kid knows, by articulation and not just orthography ("cake" fails if the kid hasn't learned the divided a). npm run inspect fails a narrative alongside a term they can't read.
- Bring your own books. Connect your own delegate (Claude, ChatGPT, item that speaks MCP) and it writes stories inner your child's sounds, or types in books you own. It checks its own words, adds pictures, and shows you the result. Only your document sees them.
- You set what your kid knows. Switch appears and tricky words on or off. Words alongside a audio they haven't learned get a dotted underline and the new audio shows in purple.
It's a Cloudflare Worker alongside fixed assets, D1 for data and R2 for pictures. No build step. If you're a tech dad (or mum) alongside a kid who's learning to read, I'd affection you to obtain this and create it yours.

Then npm run deploy whenever you're blessed (edit the routes in wrangler.jsonc for your domain; deploy needs the dictionary step, which the manuscript runs for you).
Things to know:
- It plant signed out. That's the entire app, alongside the appears and advancement kept in the browser. Accounts (and so agents) use login.finereli.com, which lone serves my own apps. To run accounts yourself, toggle in your own sign-in: public/login.js and src/verify-login.js are the lone records that cognize concerning it.
- The appears are my voice, recorded for the tiles, and they aren't in this repository. Without them the tiles motionless ray up but remain quiet. Record your own alongside tools/sounds-record.mjs (see the comment at the top). Words are spoken by Cloudflare Workers AI, so deploying needs an document alongside that enabled.
- Write a story: copy content/stories/toby-1.json, edit the pages, run npm run check. It tells you all term your kid can't read yet. Never loosen the appears to create a narrative pass: rewrite the story. docs/vocabulary.md has the queue of what to instruct next.
- Pictures: docs/illustration.md and tools/illustrate.mjs depict how the illustrations were made.
