I idea making a lot of money and operating difficult would create me happy.

In my first 20s, I got awesome grades and completed my undergrad in three years. By my mid-20s, I had completed my graduate flat in law during frequently operating 70-hour weeks.

I leaned into the idea of being a girlboss, frequently operating weekends or through my lunch, and focusing on making many of money. It was a habit I saw modeled by my parents. It worked for them, and I idea it would activity for me, until it didn't.

I idea difficult activity was the point

At 26, I worked lengthy days at my residence array following making "hard worker" and "responsible'"my character for years. I idea this was what an independent woman was: person who worked continually and optimized all of her time.

Sure, I was preservation many of prosperity and networking, but I was frequently too tired on my depart to do anything. I frequently chose to activity on Saturdays and didn't equal have period to expend my hard-earned money.

Two things made me acknowledge this wasn't a sustainable lifestyle: I formerly told a companion I couldn't obtain a 15-minute lunch interrupt to call her, and another period I struggled to lift my complete duffle bag for an upcoming trip following not operating out for months.

Something had to give.

I didn't desire to fair regain from burnout

I was plainly burned out. I could have taken several period off to regain and arrive back, but afterward the sequence would have continued.

It helped that I spent my first 20s in Cameroon and Costa Rica, two places anywhere work-life balance looks a lot distinct than it does in the US, and group live alongside their parents much longer. Looking rear on those years whenever I was really blessed helped me to inquiry what I was focusing on in my life.

I came to a new conclusion. I didn't desire to merely regain following burning out. I wanted to refuse the premise that burnout was the price of being an aspiring woman.

I stopped hustling toward anything

In 2022, as the COVID restrictions were lifted additional and a association I had been in ended, I decided to journey during operating a few hours per week. As a afterward single, childfree woman, no longer heading towards a career, I wondered what I'd substitute these traditional markers of achievement with. The answer turned out to be nothing.

I stopped trying to hustle toward something. No job, boss, passion, or individual was going to really reward me for committing to 70-hour weeks. Nothing was value putting off a dawn meal date alongside myself or an unplanned stroll in the park, or that 15-minute phone call I told my companion I couldn't take.

I decided to opt out of the competitive nature of the operating earth and alternatively concentration on optimizing myself.

5 years later, my existence looks different

Five years later, I have a existence my 26-year-old oneself would barely recognize. I activity substantially less, have built a occupation about penning and investigation for companies alongside values I admire, and have spent the former multiple years living and traveling in distinct countries.

I don't own a car or a home, and I'm not chasing a traditional occupation ladder. Instead of continually asking what I should accomplish next, I have far additional period for cooking, relationships, travel, and merely being alive.

One item I did keep from that former era of my existence was my profound condemnation that I, and all women, need to be financially independent. I have stopped suggesting that my allies activity through their lunch break; instead, we conversation concerning ethical investing and the need to continually have one's own financial institution account.

Independence turned out to average item alternatively for me

The amazing part is that opting out didn't ruin my career, and I didn't awareness the need to substitute activity alongside item else. I don't think chasing a job title, a salary, or a complete calendar would have made me awareness secure.

I think I would have continually felt the need to demonstrate myself, which appears exhausting to me now. Instead, I have the independence I sought whenever I was younger. It fair took the form of letting go of the idea that I have to continually prove my worth to myself.
