French carmaker Citroen has brought rear its 2CV brand in a bid to boost revenue of electric cars in a difficult market.

The new model, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, is a small city runabout alongside retro styling which harks rear to among the company's most celebrated designs.

As a "concept car" intended to display Citroen's direction of travel, it is not yet prepared to go on transaction but the scheme is to have a type in showrooms by 2028.

As they visage mounting competition from Chinese manufacturers, Citroen and another European brands are exploiting their bequest as a method of marketing contemporary motors.

Citroen chief administrator Xavier Chardon described the new car as "a modern, ingenious and refreshing reply to the movement challenges of tomorrow".

The first Citroen 2CV was launched in 1948, as Europe was recovering from the ravages of World War Two. It was designed as a cheap, sturdy way for French farmers and nation group to get around.

The car had elevated rotor arches and gentle suspension, letting it journey throughout a ploughed site or coarse roads - as fable would have it, without breaking a tray of duck eggs.

Its elevated rooftop let drivers deteriorate a hat at the wheel. It was uncomplicated to run and uncomplicated to repair.

Now, Citroen wants to diagram on that bequest to market an electric, small city car that is expected to market for concerning £13,000.

The appearance of the new 2CV may fine develop as Citroen develops its design. But as it stands, it shares plentifulness of styling features alongside its celebrated predecessor.

The high, flared rotor arches, the tall, curved rooftop and the eye-like headlights are all reminders of the first "deux chevaux" or "two horses".

By using memories of an old car to market a new one, Citroen is following a well-travelled road.

VW notoriously brought rear the Beetle in the delayed 1990s, alongside constricted success.

BMW's Minis have continually carried styling designed to hark rear to the extremely British original. Fiat has been marketing a retro-styled Fiat 500 for the former two decades.

But the retro-nostalgia trend has accelerated recently, as carmakers have looked for ways to market electric cars to sceptical consumers.

Citroen's French rival, Renault, has led the charge. It started alongside the Renault 5 E-Tech, which visually echoed the distinctive boxy styling of the first Renault 5, formerly an ever-present perspective on French streets. It has since revived the Renault 4 and Twingo brands as well.

VW has the distinctive ID-Buzz minivan, a throwback to the traditional T2 Transporter, during Ford is operating on a new EV which is widely expected to be called the Fiesta.

Rachel Burgess, elder publishing company of Autocar magazine, thinks it is a scheme that makes ideal sense.

"It's a brilliant differentiator from all-new car brands", she says. "An older spectators power recall the originals and awareness warmly towards them, and a younger spectators power discover an petition in the retro aspect."

Finding new ways to create cars appealing has rotate into additional crucial than ever, at a period whenever European manufacturers are facing expanding competition from Chinese brands.

"Many in the industry accept the big automotive players in Europe…face a extremely grave existential danger from assured Chinese manufacturers," says David Leggett, automotive publishing company at Global Data.

In this antagonistic endeavor environment, bequest and nostalgia could demonstrate to be mighty weapons for additional established brands, thinks automotive investigator and author Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis.

"In a earth anywhere a motion of dependable decent norm Chinese EVs are hitting Europe, linking European designs rear to their former during using the latest powertrain innovation is item the Chinese cannot do," he says.

"The Chinese can established new scheme trends, but there is constricted former there."

But Leggett thinks Citroen volition need additional than a heady whiff of nostalgia to rotate its new car into a best-seller.

"A reimagined Citroën 2CV should provision a big nod to its ancestor - particularly on cost and scheme simplicity as fine as ocular cues," he says.

"But it additionally needs to be a dependable contemporary electric car in conditions of functionality and features, alongside general appeal."
