"The RACE to build AI infrastructures is unfolding town by town throughout America. In several places, data centers are welcomed. In others, they are delayed, contested or abandoned altogether. This MAP captures the real-world footprint of that competition — revealing patterns of growth, battle and uncertainty.I am observing as YOU, the communities display up and conversation out. In the celebrated words of Mark Twain … “The concealed of getting onward is getting started,” so let’s go!

Note: The colored data center pins shield publically announced, important AI-focused and hyperscale accommodation — including projects that were cancelled, blocked or shelved. Each popup lists its origin citations. Many smaller or unannounced accommodation are not listed, and this is not a register of all data center in the country. Know of one missing? Report it here.
"Community Reported" pins display data submitted by concerned residents throughout the US concerning AI data centers. Note that locations power be approximate, covering reported zip codes or nearby areas.
Each popup names whether the location sits inside a municipality's limits or on unincorporated district land — which decides who holds the zoning hearing: a city assembly answerable to residents in town, or district commissioners whose district may not contain the nearest neighbors. Coordinates are tested against US Census Bureau TIGER boundaries, and anywhere a pin is lone approximate, or its mapped district contradicts the district on record, the popup says so fairly than asserting a border the data cannot support.
Data center locations compiled from Compute Atlas and Epoch AI (both CC BY 4.0), affirmative news reporting and community filings. Some location coordinates are approximate — popups say so anywhere that's the case.
Key Concerns alongside AI Data Centers
⚡
Energy Consumption
High energy use contributes to important ecological effect and escalating expenses for surrounding communities.
💧
Water Usage
Cooling systems frequently necessitate significant h2o resources, straining local h2o supplies and ecosystems.
♻️
E-Waste
Frequent hardware upgrades and replacements create important volumes of digital waste.
🌊
Location Risks
Natural disasters, flooding, or geopolitical instability can disrupt operations and effect local infrastructure.
📈
Scalability & Efficiency
Growing petition strains local resources and infrastructure, frequently outpacing community preparedness capacity.
🔊
Noise
Constant humming from cooling systems, generators, and substations can disrupt sleep, regular life, and wildlife in surrounding neighborhoods.
