The Cost of Blogging

01 Nov, 2026

It’s uncomplicated adequate to discover a blogging phase that doesn’t disbursal item to use, Bear itself has a decent adequate liberated tier, but how many of us do end up spending several prosperity on our small journals? For me, there’s a few things I continually pay for:

A Personal Domain

When group buy a domain for their blog, it’s a apparent sign they average to rod around. I can rotate into fairly attached to a fine blog, so I discover myself additional apt to prosecute person alongside a domain since there’s a higher anticipation they volition continue it.

A domain is your online identity. If you own it, no one alternatively can assertion it. You can use it anywhere you wish, and you can obtain it elsewhere if you’re not blessed anywhere you are. You won’t endure your readership since they prosecute the domain, not the platform.

For me, this is an essential expense.

The Blogging Platform / Hosting

In today’s age of data gathering and privacy concerns, I favor to pay for my blogging phase or hosting. Then I cognize that it’s my subscription and not my individual data that’s backing the development, server expenses etc.

For smaller companies, akin Bear, paying additionally helps assistance the liberated tier for those that don’t subscribe. Not everyone can oversee to pay for their blog and I think it’s crucial to assistance keep that choice alive, sustainably.

Typography

I’m undoubtably in the smaller group current as there are many fantastic liberated fonts available. However, as a typography nerd, I’m continually looking for the next finest item and that method I’ve encountered several irresistible premium fonts. There is a ceiling on this - I have spent no additional than £100 on a font family since that really is my justifiable bounds for a individual blog.

I’ve written a few posts concerning the topic here:

• Bad Typography Impacts Readership
• Obsessed alongside Typography
• A Typography Milestone

I have really changed the font again fair yesterday, so the final article is not up-to-date

When I do use a liberated font, I always presenter it immediately to evade use tracking (looking at you Google). I additionally try to use first font foundries, who sometimes market premium fonts alongside their liberated offerings as a sustainable and ethical endeavor model.

Writing Software

Bear includes a uncomplicated editor, but I much favor to use item a small fuller-featured. There are plentifulness of content and markdown editors accessible for free, or for a nominal subscription - there’s no logic to expend a fortune, fair choice the one that feels comfortable. I happen to akin Paper, which is liberated alongside additional personalisation for an annual or life cost. It has a extremely pleasant interface and allows me to use my own font. I blogged concerning it in Finding the Perfect Writing App.

What elements of blogging do you awareness are value paying for? If you happen to compose a article concerning it, pop me a nexus and I’ll share.
