Karl Bushby
Karl Bushby is an English walking adventurer, author and former paratrooper. Born and raised in Hull, Bushby faced bullying at a young age due to his severe dyslexia and subsequently developed an interest in birdwatching as a means of solace. He joined the British Army at the age of 16 and with the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment for 11 years, serving in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner, where he met his wife Angela in Belfast. They married and had a child, Adam, before divorcing in 1995. Bushby began the Goliath Expedition in November 1998 from Punta Arenas, Chile with the intention of walking an unbroken path back to his home town in England without any form of motorised transportation, becoming the first person in history to achieve such a feat. Bushby initially intended to continue serving in the army for the first three years of the expedition to use his signing bonuses to fund the trip with the Army's approval, but the plan was cancelled at the last minute.
