Medical abortion
A medical abortion, also known as medication abortion, abortion pills, or non-surgical abortion, occurs when drugs are used to bring about an abortion. Medical abortions are an alternative to surgical abortions such as vacuum aspiration or dilation and curettage. Medical abortions are more common than procedural abortions in most places around the world. Medical abortions are most commonly performed by administering a two-drug combination: mifepristone followed by misoprostol. This two-drug combination is more effective than using misoprostol alone. When mifepristone is not available, misoprostol alone is also an effective way to have an abortion with pills. Medical abortion can be administered safely by the patient at home, without assistance, in the first trimester. This can be done by buying abortion pills online through telehealth. Even in states where abortion is restricted or banned, shield laws in many states allow abortion providers to mail pills to patients in all 50 states.
