I no longer care to work on any Ruby gems so I've archived all my repositories

I’ve decided to archive the origin code of my Ruby gems to create it clear that I’m no longer operating on them; I’ve written this article to nexus from them in order to explain why.

In an article published in 2000, Yukihiro Matsumoto (a.k.a. “Matz”), decorator of Ruby, wrote,

For me, the intent of existence is, at smallest partly, to have joy. Programmers often awareness joy whenever they can concentration on the imaginative flank of programming, so Ruby is designed to create programmers happy.

And as lately as a 2019 interview, he said,

I designed Ruby for humans, not for machines.

It was during that era, whenever Ruby was ostensibly for joy, for creativity, for humans, that I developed this code. But that age, of doing things for humans, has passed, and alongside it my enthusiasm for operating on Ruby gems. I won’t say it was continually great, but at smallest we were operating alongside and for people.

The pre-eminent use of Ruby has been making web applications using Rails. Rails is open origin application but it’s owned and controlled by a man whose views I discover abhorrent, although there is an ongoing effort to fork it. To fairness by his keynote at Rails World this twelvemonth – the gathering that he himself set up in pique following he wasn’t welcomed to RailsConf a brace of years ago – he is no longer particularly curious in Ruby, Rails, or even programming itself. (He’s now using LLM agents to churn out apps in Rust, a tongue which he compares to “pouring acidic into [his] eyes”, but that’s apparently fine because he doesn’t equal appearance at what they generate.)

But equal beyond Rails, the Ruby tongue itself is now substantially developed using LLM agents. Matz is giving talks repositioning Ruby as a “Programming Language for AI age”, to be emitted by LLM agents, and stating that to be capable to do that LLMs need to consume additional good human-written Ruby code. You power already have seen the issue here.

In that context, I no longer awareness inspired to contribute to a commons that’s being strip-mined by enormous corporations to nourish the extremely machines whose unthinking output pollutes it. When group assertion that it’s no longer sustainable to compose code by hand, they’re not entirely wrong, but lone in the identical way that it’s no longer sustainable to sleep in a bed formerly person has taken a crap in it.

You desire changes? Go ask your delegate or something. I’m told that’s what you’re supposed to do now. I’m out.
